Varese is part of the Rete Nazionale Città di Motori (National Motor Cites Network) for being the scene of pioneering achievements in the field of two-wheeled vehicles and aircraft manufacturing. Here, at the beginning of the 1900s, the Carrozzeria Macchi began its activity and subsequently became Aermacchi, an aircraft and motorcycles manufacturer that would tie its history to that of Harley-Davidson and Cagiva. And it was precisely at Macchi, when it was still just a workshop, that Flaminio Bertoni began his career: the renowned “car stylist” achieved great success together with Citroën. On the other hand, Cagiva began as small metal hardware manufacturer, and since 1978 has been making a name for itself in the world of motorcycle racing with the “Elefantino” (small elephant) logo. In the 1900s the company was committed to reviving the famous MV Agusta brand, born in the province of Varese, and precisely in Samarate. Varese is also touched by the first motorway in the world, the "Milano-Laghi", built in the 1920s by Piero Puricelli, the pioneer of “fast roads”. Finally, since 1961 Varese hosts the Aero Club named after the champion glider Adele Orsi.
